Strange Days Bill of the Dead Book 1 Audible Audio Edition Rick Gualtieri Christopher John Fetherolf Books Reviews
- STRANGE DAYS is the reboot of the TOME OF BILL series that remains one of my favorite literary guilty pleasures. The second series, called BILL OF THE DEAD, is the start of a new storyline that reverses a lot of the final changes in the finale as well as sets up an entirely new chronicle of what I hope to be an equally lengthy series of books. It's an entertaining book, one of the author's best, and fans of the series should definitely pick it up.
If you plan to read the series, I suggest you read the previous volumes first as starting here will leave you thoroughly spoiled for it. Which, I mean, duh as it's the 9th book in the series (technically 12th counting a few spin-off books). So, discussing the book at length will require some spoilers. Consider yourself warned.
Strange Days is a good return to form for the author and actually an improvement on the original series. In the TOB, Bill was a grossly immature 25-year-old sexist and homophobic jerk who made being turned into a vampire seem lame. It was kind of the point of the series and one the author was aware of that a lot of Bill's problems were his own making. This volume picks up five years after the end of the previous series and, much to the readers surprise, Bill is a good deal calmer, more mature, and not offending everyone with every other sentence out of his mouth.
Bill is still the same wise cracking jerk he always was but the author cleverly compares him to one of his friends stuck in a (figurative as well as literal) limbo to show how much the character has grown. He's in a stable-ish relationship no one saw coming and yet actually works. He's also mostly put all the supernatural shenanigans in his life behind him.
Obviously, there wouldn't be much of a story if this remained the case and Bill is forced back into the world of the supernatural. He is reunited with a lot of his earlier associates and they are sent to undo the grand finale of the previous books. I'm okay with this, really, and enjoyed the way it all played out. I admit, I wasn't entirely fond about how some of the characters were handled like Gan, Sheila, and Sally but am interested in how things develop for them. I admit, its mostly Sally that bothered me because she's barely in the book. I missed Bill and her interaction. I don't usually ship characters but I kind of wanted them to make it work.
Bizarre, I know.
In any case, this isn't the kind of book you should pick up if you're unfamiliar with the series but should be a tremendous treat for fans. It's got all of the humor, wisecracks, pop culture references, and crazy shenanigans as before but the protagonist is a good deal more likable.
9/10 - This is a return to the Bill the Vampire universe-and it is great fun. It is best to have read the first series, The Tome of Bill, before you pick this one up. This series isn't a continuation of Tome of Bill, as the first series is complete, but it is after the events of that series, and I feel it would be confusing to read this one without reading Tome of Bill first-it is relatively inexpensive to pick them all up, and is a great read!
Now on to this series! Rick has come up with an extremely believable reason to come back to Bill's world, and it is full of all the snark, dirty jokes, and action that made the first one fun. It is hard to write too many good things without spoilers, but if you liked the first series you will love this book, as well! - First and foremost, if you HAVEN'T read the Tome of Bill Series go do that first. I'll wait.
Okay.
After a passage of a few years, Bill is "Uncle Bill" to his dead best friend's daughter, although he saved the world, sort of, he still lives in his old Apartment and has room mates. Life is pretty good for him, even though, well, things don't always go the way we hoped.
Of course, being Bill Ryder FORMER Vampire Freewill, the Universe is conspiring to kick him right in the nuts all over again.
This book has all we loved about Tome of Bill and More! You'll laugh, you may cry, it WILL become part of you! You may find yourself quoting the book to the amusement or disappointment of your friends. Either way, it's a great beginning to a whole new Bill adventure! - Although, I loved the way the Tome of Bill series ended, I still hoped the author would find a way to bring back the stories in this world. I was not disappointed! Bill and the gang are back. Facing a new'ish Big Bad, though a lot has changed, some things remain the same. This was a great setup book for the next in the series. I am so glad Bill is back

Because Strange days might be the best read of them alll... btw consider this a spoiler alert Tom is really living up to his namesake ...starting with peeping - Seriously, is that I have to wait for the next one
I read the entire first series back to back, finding it years after it had published
When I saw on a whim that the new series had started, I had it downloaded and finished within 48 hours- I seriously wish it was out already
Rick, if you read these then send me them in advance D - After way too long Bill is back and I was so glad to see it.
Though to be honest, when I say that he's as "Bad as Ever" we all know that he wasn't all that great a vampire to begin with. Am I right?
The story picks up nicely 6 years after then end of the prior series. Our familiar cast is back and as snarky as ever. I love the interactions as they feel "real" to me. I have friends JUST like that and if we aren't bashing each other to show our affection we know we've pissed someone off somehow.
While I wouldn't suggest this as an entry into the Tomb of Bill, you really do need to read the prior series for things to make sense, it is a natural and FUN extension to what has gone before. The story is interesting. The character interaction is fun. The world is FASCINATING and I can't wait to see what comes next.
Keep it up Rick and I'll keep reading.
Bravo. - Bill the Vampire is back. After saving the world and resetting things to "normal," Bill and his friends are back in all their snarky glory!
